Special Yoga and Your Child

Special Yoga methodology includes the classical yoga practices of movement, breathing, deep relaxation, as well as sound, rhythm, massage, and sensory integration techniques.  We meet every child, both in our group and in our individual sessions, with the pure intention of creating a practice that will encourage their fullest potential. We celebrate the strength within each child. When a child is relaxed it creates the optimum condition for the possibility of positive change. Our work has proven that people with special needs and disabilities have a great deal to teach others about acceptance and unconditional love.

Their message to us is very powerful, and in exchange we take a caring approach towards sharing the Special Yoga practice that can help them physically, emotionally and spiritually develop.

The Family

We recognise that parenting a child with special needs comes with additional requirements for the whole family.

As a family you can benefit from Special Yoga’s holistic approach, where your children are safe, accepted and nurtured. We will focus on your child’s strengths, explore their full potential and encourage a positive self-development.

As well as the moments of respite support and identification with other parents and carers when their children are doing yoga, we also provide parents’ workshops, and family classes.  We actively encourage parents and carers to take training with us and learn how to support their own well-being as well as the child’s.

Special Yoga Practitioners

At the heart of Special Yoga is the quality of the methodology that we provide.  We therefore continually work to maintain a high standard in our certified training programmes, Continued Professional Development (CPD), mentoring and the peer to peer support that enables our Special Yoga practitioners to provide a service of excellence.

Yoga is a 5000 year old practice of mind, body and spirit.  We see innumerable benefits on all levels of the child’s being. Many studies have been carried out regarding the impact that yoga and mindfulness has on the wellbeing of all who practice.  When the child is taken out of stress and into a relaxed state, it creates the optimum state for the possibility of positive change.

Specific benefits include:

  • Reduction in stress and anxiety.
  • Improved resilience
  • Developing the ability to self-regulate across environments and demands
  • Developing balance and the ability to relax and release tension, fear and  frustration
  • Improved self- awareness: both body and mind
  • Improved motor planning and control
  • Improved immune function
  • Improved quality and quantity of sleep
  • Enhanced respiratory ability and capacity
  • Enhanced  sense of well-being, calm and peace
  • Creating emotional balance

From Abdullah’s Mum and Dad …

“Abdullah, since birth, has been faced with some physical challenges so he’s a bit delayed overall on basic things such as walking, crawling and standing up. Special Yoga has allowed us to see our son grow week-on-week by developing skills and getting comfortable with his body. Things that he’s been doing with his physiotherapist have worked closely with the yoga in a friendly and most peaceful environment. As a parent, myself and my wife, both feel that Abdullah has got comfortable with his own body, he knows his surroundings and it’s really helping him do all the basics and necessities – it’s been great.”
